Spence Cater at The Civic, Stourport - on - Severn 23/05/2015
Spence Cater is a veteran performer.
He has years of busking and gigs around the country (and beyond) under his belt, and it shows.
His guitar style is unshowy, but he knows his way around the fretboard and augments his chords with licks and fills, and has a great way with dynamics. His voice is warm with an edge of gravel and employs light and shade to great effect.
The Civic crowd was sparse on a Bank Holiday Saturday night, but Spence worked the audience regardless. In a set comprising around 70% original material, Spence’s own songs were as well-received as the few covers he threw in - a testament to his writing skills. His patter was succinct and witty, raising a laugh with ease as if playing to old friends instead of complete strangers.
Wry humour is never far from the surface and Spence’s wordplay is a joy - “This relationship has sailed” being a typically clever line. Other songs demonstrate Spence’s diverse influences and he never falls into the singer-songwriter trap of too many songs with the same tempo/style/delivery.
An hour was gone all too soon and I for one was left wanting to hear more. On the night of Eurovision, Spence Cater was a refreshing change from mediocre manufactured Pop music.
Seek him out online, order his CD but, above all, get out and see Spence Cater live - a real treat!

'Thank you so much Spence for playing and singing at our wedding! We were so touched by your performance and it made our wedding day feel really special. You chose the right range of songs for the guests we had and everyone came back saying how much they enjoyed your singing. You made the evening a lot of fun and wish you all the best in your future music career. Much appreciated.' Imran and Zuraida Khan - Cirencester |

'Well, what a triumph!...
Our party on Saturday was a splendid affair, made so much the better for you being there playing your guitar for us.
The music was great. Just what we wanted. You played all our favourite songs and so much more.
Thank you for your part, in helping to make our party such a wonderful celebration of our recent marriage.
Hopefully we will have another party next year and you can come and play for us again then?
We will definitely be recommending you to all our friends.
Kind regards and many, many thanks.'
